What an EV Charger Installation Actually Involves

The charger on the wall is the visible part. What sets the scope of the work, and most of the cost, is the electrical installation behind it — and that is specific to your property and to the equipment you have chosen.

The property itself

  • Where the charger needs to be mounted
  • Garage, carport or an exterior location
  • The distance between the panel and that location
  • The route the circuit has to take to get there
  • ESA notification and inspection where applicable

None of these has a standard answer, which is why this page does not give you one. Two houses on the same street can take the same charger and need noticeably different electrical work, because the panel is in a different place, the parking is on the other side, or one of them has a service with more room to spare.

That is also why we will not quote a charger installation properly without reviewing the property first. What we can do before then is tell you what we would be looking at, which is what the rest of this page sets out.

Level 2 Home EV Charging

Most people who install a charger at home are installing what the industry calls Level 2: a dedicated 240-volt circuit run to charging equipment mounted at the parking spot, rather than a cord run to an ordinary household receptacle.

What we look at for a home charger

  • Whether that location is inside a garage or outdoors
  • How far it sits from the electrical panel
  • The capacity of the existing electrical service
  • Whether the panel has space for the new circuit
  • The charger manufacturer’s electrical requirements
  • The route the circuit can realistically take

The appeal is straightforward: the vehicle charges at the property, on its own circuit, without depending on public charging being free when you need it.

How quickly it actually charges is a question we deliberately do not answer with a number. It depends on the vehicle, on the charging equipment, on the electrical supply available at the property, on the vehicle’s own onboard charger, and on how the charger itself is configured. Anyone quoting you a charging time before knowing all five is guessing.

What we will tell you, once we have looked at the property, is what the installation involves and what the electrical scope is.

Electrical Capacity, Panel Space and What Your Property Can Support

This is the part of an EV charger installation that most often decides the scope, and it is the part that cannot be answered from the outside.

Some properties take a charger with no change to the existing electrical service at all. Others need electrical work first. Which one yours is depends on the service you have, what the property already draws, and the requirements of the charger you have chosen.

Two separate things get run together here. Capacity is whether the existing electrical service can supply the additional load. Space is whether there is physically room in the panel for another circuit. A property can have one without the other, and the answer to each is found in different places.

We will not tell you that you need a panel upgrade before we have looked, and we will not tell you that you do not. What we will do is assess the existing electrical installation against the equipment you want and set out what electrical work is appropriate for it. Where more than one approach is workable, we will explain the options rather than picking for you.

Residential EV Charger Installations

We install home chargers across North York and Toronto in the property types the area is actually made of — and the electrical route is different in almost every one of them.

In a detached house with the panel in the basement and an attached garage above it, the run can be short and straightforward. The equipment is often the least variable part of a home installation. The route, the capacity and the mounting location are what change.

Condo charging is worth its own section, because the electrical work is often the most predictable part of it.

What a condo installation usually depends on

  • Where the parking space sits in the building
  • Which electrical source the charger can be fed from
  • The route the cable would have to take
  • The building’s own requirements for this kind of work
  • Approval from property management or the condominium corporation
  • Access to common elements where the route crosses them
  • Coordination with the building during the work

We can carry out the electrical installation. What we cannot do is approve it on the building’s behalf, and we would be cautious about any contractor who suggests otherwise. Buildings set their own requirements for work of this kind, and those requirements differ from one building to the next.

Nor can we tell you in advance that your building will accommodate a private charger, because some cannot, and the reasons are usually about the electrical source and the route rather than about the charger itself.

What we can do is look at the parking space, the available source and the proposed route, tell you what the electrical work would involve, and work within whatever the building requires. If the answer turns out to be that it is not workable, you will hear that from us too.

It is worth being clear about the boundary. This is commercial electrical installation work. It is not fleet-depot engineering, utility-scale charging infrastructure, high-voltage distribution or networked charging management, and we do not offer charging-station operation as a service. If that is what a project actually needs, we will tell you rather than take it on.

Charging Equipment and How It Connects

We install the charging equipment you have chosen. That includes a Tesla Wall Connector, and it equally includes the Level 2 chargers sold by other manufacturers.

To be explicit about it: City Brite is not a Tesla-authorised, Tesla-certified or manufacturer-affiliated installer, and does not claim to be. What we are is the licensed electrical contractor who installs the equipment and carries out the electrical work behind it, to the requirements the manufacturer sets for that unit.

Chargers differ in how they are intended to connect — some are hardwired, others are designed to be supplied through a dedicated receptacle — and the manufacturer’s requirements, along with the installation location, are what decide which applies. That is a decision for the installation rather than something to work out in advance, and it is not something to attempt yourself: this page is here to explain the options, not to describe how the work is done.

How an EV Charger Installation Usually Goes

An EV charger installation will generally involve steps such as:

    What you drive, what charger you have in mind, and where you want to charge it.

  2. Review the existing panel and service

    The electrical service to the property, the panel, and what is already on it.

  3. Consider the charger against the capacity

    What the equipment requires, set against what the property has available.

  4. Review the route and conditions

    How the circuit would run from the panel to the charging location, and what that route crosses.

  5. Define the electrical scope

    What the installation involves, including any electrical work needed before it.

  6. Explain the scope and the pricing

    A written scope or quote where appropriate, explained before anything is installed.

  7. Carry out the approved installation

    The electrical work you have agreed to, and nothing beyond it without asking first.

  8. Test the completed work

    Testing the completed electrical installation, and tidying up after ourselves.

  9. ESA notification and inspection

    Filed and coordinated by us where the work requires it.

That is the general shape rather than a fixed sequence, and not every project runs through all of it in that order. A straightforward garage installation on a service with capacity to spare is a different job from one that needs panel work first or a long exterior route, so we do not put a fixed duration on an installation before seeing the property.

Where the electrical work requires it, City Brite files the ESA notification and coordinates the inspection with the Electrical Safety Authority. Not every project follows an identical process, and what applies depends on the work being carried out — which is something we establish for your installation rather than assume.

We describe ourselves as a Licensed Electrical Contractor because that is the accurate term. Phrases like "ESA certified electrician" or "ESA approved contractor" get used in this industry, and they are not the same thing.

North York is where most of our EV charger work happens, and the housing stock is the reason the job varies as much as it does. Post-war detached homes with original panels sit a few streets from recently renovated houses with plenty of capacity. Townhouse blocks share walls and complicate the route. Condo towers bring the building into the conversation. Commercial properties along the arterial roads have their own parking arrangements and their own electrical rooms.

The practical differences show up in the same few places every time: where the panel is, where you park, what the service has spare, and what the cable has to cross to get between the two. Can you install a Level 2 EV charger at my house?

In most cases yes, but the electrical scope depends on the property. We look at the existing service, the capacity available, whether the panel has room for the circuit, and the route from the panel to where you want to charge.

That review is what tells us what the installation involves. It is not something anyone can answer accurately over the phone, and we would rather say so than give you a number we would have to revise.

Does an EV charger require a panel upgrade?

Not necessarily. Plenty of properties take a charger with no change to the existing electrical service at all. Others need electrical work first.

How do I know if my electrical service can support an EV charger?

By having it looked at. There is no reliable way to establish it from a photograph or a description of the panel.

Two things are considered separately: whether the service has capacity for the additional load, and whether the panel physically has space for another circuit. A property can have one without the other.

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?

Yes. We install customer-selected charging equipment, and a Tesla Wall Connector is a common example of it.

To be clear about what that does and does not mean: City Brite is not a Tesla-authorised or Tesla-certified installer and has no affiliation with the manufacturer. We are the licensed electrical contractor carrying out the electrical installation, to the requirements the manufacturer sets for the unit.

Can an EV charger be installed outside?

Exterior installations are common, for driveways and parking areas without a garage.

The location affects the equipment selection, the route and how the installation is carried out, so it is one of the things reviewed at the property rather than something with a single answer.

Can you install an EV charger in a condo?

Sometimes, and it depends on the building as much as on the electrical work. The parking location, the electrical source available, the cable route, the building’s own requirements and approval from property management or the condominium corporation all come into it.

We can carry out the electrical installation and work within whatever the building requires. What we cannot do is approve the work on the building’s behalf, or promise you in advance that a particular building will allow it.
