These are the situations we are called out to most often. They are grouped by what the reader actually notices, rather than by what turns out to be behind it — because at the point you pick up the phone, the symptom is all anyone has.

None of these symptoms has a single guaranteed cause. A breaker that trips repeatedly might be responding to the load on the circuit, to a fault somewhere along it, to a device that has failed, or to the breaker itself — and the same symptom in two houses on the same street can have two different explanations. A dead receptacle is often not faulty at all; the problem sits further upstream, in a connection nobody has looked at in years.

That is what troubleshooting is: establishing what is actually happening before anyone decides what to repair. It is why we will not tell you over the phone what is wrong or what it will cost to put right, and why the first part of the visit is testing rather than fixing.

Most residential calls start with one thing. It rarely stays that way for long once testing starts — not because work gets invented, but because a fault has a path, and following it is how you find where it actually begins. What we find, we explain. What we recommend, we explain the reason for.

In a condo, the fault is usually inside the suite and is ours to deal with. Sometimes it is not: where the problem sits in the building distribution or in common elements, that is the corporation and its own contractor, and we will tell you plainly when that is what we are looking at rather than working around it.

Older wiring is not automatically a problem. Plenty of houses in North York have run for decades on installations that were done properly and have been left alone since. What matters is the condition of the wiring, how it has been extended and altered over the years, and whether the connections are still sound — questions that are answered by looking, not by the age on the deed.

A fault in a commercial space is a business problem before it is an electrical one. A circuit feeding equipment, lighting over a sales floor, receptacles a workstation depends on — when one of those stops, something stops with it.

We work in ordinary commercial premises — offices, storefronts, warehouses and tenant units. We are not a high-voltage, utility or heavy industrial contractor, and where a problem sits with the incoming supply or with specialised plant equipment we will say so rather than take on work that belongs with someone else.

Commercial troubleshooting tends to involve more history than residential. Spaces get refitted, tenants change, circuits get extended for equipment that has since been replaced, and the panel schedule stops matching the building years before anyone notices. Tracing a fault in that context means testing what is actually connected, not trusting the labels.

How We Troubleshoot an Electrical Fault

A troubleshooting visit will generally involve steps such as:

  1. Understand the problem

    What stopped working, when it started, what else it affects, and whether anything changed around the same time.

  2. Review the area

    The affected circuit, equipment or part of the property, and the panel that feeds it.

  3. Test and trace

    Testing at the devices and along the circuit to narrow down where the fault actually sits.

  4. Identify the likely cause

    What the testing points to, and how confident we are in it.

  5. Explain what we found

    In plain terms, including what we ruled out along the way and why.

  6. Explain the work and the pricing

    What we would recommend doing about it. We explain pricing before proceeding with additional work.

  7. Carry out the approved repair

    The corrective work you have agreed to, and nothing beyond it without asking first.

  8. Test the repaired work

    Testing the affected electrical work after the repair, and tidying up after ourselves.

That is the shape of it rather than a script. Some faults are found in the first few minutes; others are intermittent, buried in a finished wall, or only show themselves under a load that is not present when we are standing there. We will not claim every fault can be identified immediately, and we do not put a fixed amount of troubleshooting time on a job before seeing it. What we will do is keep you informed about what we are finding as we go.

Troubleshooting Compared With a Defined Project

These two are priced differently, and it is worth understanding why before you get in touch.

A defined project has a known scope. Replacing a panel, wiring a basement, installing pot lights in a kitchen — the work can be described before it starts, so a written scope or quote can be provided where appropriate and you know what you are agreeing to.

Troubleshooting starts from a symptom instead of a scope. Until the fault has been located, the repair it needs is not known, and neither is what it takes to put right. Anyone who quotes a firm repair price for a fault they have not yet found is guessing at one of the two numbers.

What we can commit to is the principle: we explain pricing before proceeding with additional work. Once the cause is identified, you will hear what we recommend and what it involves before any of it goes ahead.

What Affects the Cost of an Electrical Repair

We are not going to publish average prices for work nobody has looked at. What we can do is set out honestly what makes one repair cost more than another.

Finding the fault

  • Whether the fault is constant or intermittent

The honest position is that diagnosis usually has to come before the final repair scope can be established. Once we know what we are dealing with, you will know what it involves before we carry on.

When to Stop Using a Circuit

Most of what we are called out to is ordinary and fixable, and nothing here is meant to alarm anyone. A few things are worth treating differently, though.

A burning or hot-plastic smell, visible scorching or damage, a device or cover plate that is hot to the touch, buzzing or arcing at a receptacle or switch — where you notice any of those, stop using the affected equipment or circuit if that can be done safely. Unplugging what is connected to it, or switching off the breaker that feeds it if you know which one it is, is as far as it should go.

Please do not go further than that. Removing a panel cover, opening up devices, pulling at wiring or working on anything energised is not homeowner work, and it is not something we would ask a client to do. Call a licensed electrician and let someone look at it properly.

ESA Notification and Inspection

Not every repair is notifiable. Replacing a failed device or correcting a loose connection is not the same as installing new circuits or altering an electrical installation, and it would be misleading to suggest every service call involves the Electrical Safety Authority.

North York holds an unusually wide range of property in a single part of the city. A post-war bungalow in Downsview, a house in Willowdale that has been renovated twice by two different owners, a condo at Bayview Village, a low-rise apartment block in Don Mills and an office unit on a commercial strip are all served by the same trade, and they fail in entirely different ways.

That variety is the argument against assuming a cause before arriving. Two properties a few streets apart can produce the same reported symptom for unrelated reasons — one because of how a circuit was extended during a renovation, the other because of a connection that has worked loose over thirty years. The installation in front of us settles it, not the postal code or the year the house went up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one without testing is guessing. A breaker that trips repeatedly may be doing its job in response to the load on the circuit, reacting to a fault somewhere along it, responding to a failed appliance or device, or failing itself.

What tends to help us narrow it down is knowing when it happens: at a particular time of day, when a specific appliance runs, only in wet weather, or with no pattern at all. Note what you observe and tell us — it shortens the search.

Why did one receptacle stop working?

Often the receptacle itself is fine. A dead outlet is frequently the visible end of something happening further upstream — a connection that has worked loose in another box, a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, or a device that has failed and taken the rest of the run with it.

It is also one of the more common single-item service calls, and usually one of the more straightforward ones once the circuit has been traced.

Why are my lights flickering?

Flickering can come from the fixture, the lamp, the dimmer, the switch, a connection along the circuit, or something further back than any of those. Dimmable LED lamps paired with a dimmer that was never designed for them are a common and entirely undramatic explanation.

It is worth having looked at when it is new behaviour, affects more than one fixture, or comes with any other symptom — because the same appearance can also point at a connection problem, and that is worth ruling out.

What can cause part of a home to lose power?

Losing power to part of a property while the rest stays on generally points somewhere between the panel and the affected area. That could be a breaker, a connection, a fault on a circuit, or something at the service equipment.

We test to find where the supply stops rather than assuming, then explain what that means for the repair.

Can you troubleshoot older wiring?

Yes, and a fair amount of what we do is in older houses. Age on its own does not make an installation faulty — condition, how it has been altered, and the state of the connections are what matter.

Where we find that the wiring itself needs replacing rather than repairing, we will say so, explain why, and treat it as its own piece of work rather than folding it quietly into a service call.

Can you troubleshoot electrical problems in a condo?

Yes. Most in-suite electrical faults are the owner or occupant to deal with, and we handle those in the same way we would in a house.

Some are not: where the problem is in building distribution or common elements, that falls to the corporation and its own contractor. If that is what we find, we will tell you rather than working around it.

Do you provide commercial electrical troubleshooting?

Yes — offices, storefronts, warehouses and tenant units. Faults affecting lighting, receptacles, circuits and the equipment they serve are ordinary commercial work for us.

Not with any honesty, no. Until the fault has been located, the repair it needs is unknown, and a firm price for unknown work is a number someone has made up.

Do electrical repairs always require an ESA inspection?

No. Many repairs do not involve a notification at all — replacing a failed device or correcting a connection is not the same as altering or extending an installation.

When does an electrical repair become a larger wiring project?

Usually when the same fault keeps reappearing in different places, when a circuit has been extended past what it was built for, or when the wiring is deteriorated widely rather than in one spot. At that point repairing individual symptoms stops being good value.
