Pot Light Installation

Most pot light work falls into one of two jobs: putting a new layout into a ceiling that has never had one, or replacing recessed fixtures that are already there. They are different pieces of work, and the second is not always simpler than the first.

What decides the layout

  • How the room is actually used, and where light is needed rather than where it is even
  • Ceiling height, which changes how far light spreads before it reaches the floor
  • Ceiling construction, and which way the joists run
  • Where existing wiring, switches and circuits already are
  • What sits above the ceiling — an attic, another floor, ducting, plumbing or insulation
  • Whether the fixtures need to dim, and from how many switch positions

New layouts are set out around the room rather than by a formula. A kitchen wants light on the counters, not a grid centred on the floor. A living room usually wants a softer, wider wash. A hallway may want very little. Anyone quoting a fixed spacing for every ceiling is guessing, and the result tends to be either a runway of downlights or dark corners the layout never accounted for.

Replacing older recessed fixtures is common in North York and Toronto homes that were fitted out ten or twenty years ago, when the housings were deeper and the lamps ran hot. LED fixtures draw far less and run cooler, and slim wafer-style fixtures fit into ceilings where a traditional housing will not physically go — which matters under a low basement ceiling or where a joist sits in the way. Whether a straight swap works, or the opening has to change, depends on what is up there.

Dimming and switching are worth settling before the holes are cut, not after. Which fixtures dim, how low they go, whether they are controlled from one switch or several, and how the room is split into zones all affect the wiring, and adding a zone afterwards means going back into the ceiling.

Lighting Room by Room

Different rooms want different things from their lighting. These are the ones that come up most, and what actually changes between them from an electrical point of view.

Kitchens

Kitchens ask more of their lighting than most rooms, and they are usually worth planning carefully. Pot lights over the working side of the counter, rather than centred on the room where you end up standing in your own light. Under-cabinet or task lighting where it earns its place. An island or a table often wants its own fixture and its own switch, so the room can be bright for cooking and low for sitting. Kitchen circuits are often already well loaded, so what is available matters. If the kitchen is being renovated, the lighting is far easier to plan alongside the rest of the wiring.

Basements

Basements come up often for pot lights, and conditions vary widely from one to the next. Ceiling height is the first question: where headroom is tight, slim wafer-style fixtures may fit where a deeper housing cannot. An open joist ceiling is straightforward to wire and a good moment to decide the layout. A finished ceiling means working through it, and where the wiring can run depends on which way the joists sit and what is already between them. Basements usually benefit from being split into zones — a bright working area and a softer sitting area rarely want the same switch.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are a room where fixture selection is genuinely constrained. What can be installed, and where, depends on how close it is to a tub or shower and on the requirements that apply to that location, so the fixture is chosen for the position rather than the other way round. Beyond that it is the same conversation as any other room: general light, light at the mirror where it is wanted, and switching that suits how the room is used. We will tell you what can go where once we have seen it.

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices

These rooms usually want less light than people expect, and better control of it. Pot lights work well combined with other fixtures rather than replacing them — a ceiling fixture, lamps or wall lighting doing the atmosphere while recessed lighting fills in the general level. Dimming is usually worth having in these rooms. Bedrooms often want two-location switching so the light can be turned off from the bed. Home offices want light that does not sit behind you on a screen. Hallways usually need far fewer fixtures than a grid would suggest.

Garages, laundry rooms and utility spaces come up too, and are usually simpler: enough even light to see what you are doing, on switching that makes sense from the door you actually come in through.

Exterior and Soffit Pot Lights

Recessed lighting is not only an indoor job. The same work goes onto the outside of the building — most often soffit pot lights along the eaves and overhangs, and recessed fixtures in porch, entry and other covered ceilings.

Fixture selection carries more weight outside than in. What can be installed, and where, depends on the position it is going into, what the existing wiring is, and the electrical requirements that apply to that location. A fixture in a covered porch ceiling and one in an exposed soffit are not the same application, so the fixture is chosen to suit the position rather than the other way round.

How many fixtures a property takes, and where they sit, depends on the building: the roofline, how the soffit is built, what access there is above it, and where power is already available. That is worked out at the property rather than from a photograph, which is why we will not put a fixture count or a spacing on exterior lighting before seeing it. Soffit lighting suits a lot of the detached and semi-detached housing across North York and Toronto, where there is an overhang to work with in the first place.

Switching is worth settling at the same time. Exterior lighting is usually kept on its own switching rather than shared with an interior circuit, and there are control options worth going through for how and when it comes on. Which of them suit a particular installation depends on the fixtures and the wiring they are going onto.

Dimmers and Lighting Controls

Dimming makes a real difference to how a room feels, and it is also where a lot of the problems turn up after the fact.

Not every LED fixture dims, and not every dimmer suits every fixture. A dimmer and a light that are not matched can flicker, buzz, refuse to go low, or drop out near the bottom of the range. Often that is a compatibility question rather than anything wrong with the wiring, and it is worth settling by choosing the dimmer to suit the fixtures rather than assuming any two will work together. Lighting that flickers or drops out on its own, with no dimmer involved, is a different problem and worth having diagnosed.

Switching layout is worth thinking about at the same time. A room controlled from more than one doorway needs the wiring for it. Splitting a space into zones — counter and island, working area and sitting area — is straightforward while the ceiling is open and much less so afterwards. We will go through what you want to control and from where, then wire for that.

If you already have lighting you like and only want it to dim, that is a smaller job, but it still starts with what the fixtures are and what is in the switch box.

Replacing and Upgrading Existing Lighting

Plenty of this work is not a new layout at all. It is older recessed fixtures being changed for LED, fixtures being swapped or relocated, dimmers being added, or a few extra lights going in where the room has always been short of them.

These are usually smaller pieces of work, but they still start the same way — by looking at what is already there. What the existing fixtures are and how they are housed, what the wiring above the ceiling is and what condition it is in, whether the circuit has room for what is being added, and what the switch box will actually take. A straight fixture swap and a job that turns into new wiring look identical from the floor.

Relocating a fixture is worth calling out separately, because moving a light even a short distance means an opening in the ceiling at the old position as well as the new one.

Lighting During a Renovation

A renovation is a good time to do lighting properly. Kitchen and basement renovations, bathrooms, additions and larger interior work all open up ceilings and walls that are normally closed, and while they are open the wiring can go exactly where the layout wants it rather than where it can be threaded.

It is also the point at which lighting decisions are simplest to revisit. Where the fixtures go, how many zones the room has, which positions dim and where the switches sit are all straightforward to adjust on an open ceiling and awkward once it is boarded.

None of that means lighting work requires a renovation. Plenty of pot lights go into finished ceilings with no other work happening. But if the walls are coming down anyway, it is worth deciding the lighting before they go back up.

Access and Ceiling Conditions

How straightforward a pot light installation is depends almost entirely on what is above the ceiling, and that is worth being honest about before the work starts rather than after.

A finished ceiling with an accessible attic above it is usually straightforward. A finished ceiling with a floor above it means working within the joist spaces, and which way the joists run decides where wiring can travel. Insulation, ducting, plumbing and existing wiring all take up room up there. Concrete ceilings, which turn up in some condos and in parts of older buildings, change the approach entirely. Ceiling height affects both the layout and which fixtures physically fit.

Installing recessed lighting means making openings in the ceiling — that is what a recessed fixture is. Beyond the fixture openings themselves, running wiring through a finished ceiling can mean additional access points, and how many depends on the conditions above. We plan routes to limit unnecessary access where it is practical, and we will tell you what we expect to need before starting. What we will not do is promise a pot light installation with no holes and no disruption, because on a finished ceiling that is not a promise anyone can keep.

Drywall patching, taping and painting are not part of the electrical scope unless that has been specifically agreed for the project.

Lighting and Your Existing Electrical Capacity

Adding lighting does not usually mean touching the panel. Modern LED fixtures draw very little, and a normal pot light project generally works within the circuits a house already has.

What gets looked at

  • What the existing lighting circuit already carries
  • Whether the work needs a new circuit or can extend an existing one
  • The condition and type of the wiring being connected to
  • Available breaker space, if a new circuit is going in
  • Panel capacity, only where the wider project actually calls for it

Where it does become a question is on larger projects — a whole basement being finished, a full-floor renovation, or lighting going in alongside other new loads at the same time. Then it is worth confirming there is room for what is being added rather than assuming.

If the panel does turn out to be the limiting factor, that is a separate conversation and a separate piece of work, and we will say so plainly rather than folding it into a lighting quote.

ESA Notification and Inspection

Not all lighting work is treated the same way. Changing a fixture for another fixture is a different matter from installing new circuits and new wiring in a ceiling, and the two do not carry the same requirements.

Where the work requires it, City Brite files the ESA notification and coordinates the inspection with the Electrical Safety Authority. Where it does not, we will tell you that too rather than adding a step that does not apply to your job.

How a Lighting Project Runs

  1. Talk through the rooms

    Which spaces are involved, what you want the lighting to do in each one, and what is prompting the work — a renovation, a dark room, or fixtures that have had their day.

  2. Look at what is there

    Existing lighting and switching, the wiring feeding it, the ceiling construction and what sits above it. This is the step that decides how much of the rest is straightforward.

  3. Set the fixture positions

    Where the lights go, how many, and what the ceiling and the joists above it will actually allow. Positions get agreed before anything is cut.

  4. Settle the switching

    Which fixtures are on which switch, what dims, where the controls sit, and how many positions each is controlled from.

  5. Written scope or quote where appropriate

    So you know what is included, what is not, and what would change it before any work starts.

  6. Carry out the installation

    Wiring, fixture openings, mounting and connections, working to the agreed positions and keeping access to what was discussed.

  7. ESA notification and inspection where required

    Filed and coordinated by us on the work that calls for it.

  8. Test, set and clean up

    Every fixture and control tested, dimming checked across its range, and the work area cleared.

How long a lighting project takes depends on how many fixtures are going in, whether the ceilings are open or finished, what the access above them is like, and whether other renovation work is running alongside it. We would rather set a realistic expectation than a convenient one, so we will not put a fixed timeline on a project before we know what is involved.

We do not publish per-fixture prices, and you should be careful with anyone who does. The same number of pot lights can be straightforward in one ceiling and genuinely awkward in another, depending on what is above it. These are the things that actually move it.

Pot Light Installation in North York and Toronto Homes

North York covers a wide range of housing for one part of the city — post-war bungalows and side-splits, larger detached homes on established streets, rows of townhouses, low-rise apartments and a steady supply of houses being renovated or rebuilt. That variety is the whole point when it comes to lighting, because the ceiling above a 1950s bungalow, a 1990s two-storey and a recent condo are three different jobs even when the fixtures are identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pot lights does a room need?

There is no single answer, and be wary of one. It depends on the size and shape of the room, the ceiling height, what the room is used for, how much light the fixtures actually put out and how wide their beam spreads, and what other lighting is in the space.

A kitchen that needs light on the counters and a bedroom that mainly needs to feel comfortable can be the same size and want quite different numbers. We work it out from the room rather than from a rule.

Is there a standard spacing for pot lights?

Not one that holds everywhere. Spacing rules of thumb circulate widely, but they assume a ceiling height and a fixture type, and they fall apart as soon as either changes.

The practical approach is to place fixtures where light is wanted, work with the ceiling height and the beam spread of the fixtures being used, and keep to positions the joists above will actually allow.

Can pot lights be installed in a finished ceiling?

Usually yes, and it is a very common job. The fixture openings are made in the finished ceiling, and the wiring is run through the space above.

How straightforward it is depends on what is up there — an accessible attic makes it easier, a floor above means working within the joist spaces, and insulation, ducting and existing wiring all have a say.

Will drywall need to be cut?

Can existing pot lights be changed to LED?

In most cases yes, and it is one of the more common lighting jobs in homes fitted out fifteen or twenty years ago.

Whether it is a straight swap depends on the existing housings and the opening size. Sometimes the new fixture fits the existing opening; sometimes the opening has to change. That is something to check before ordering fixtures.

Can dimmers be added to lighting I already have?

Often, but not always, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. The fixtures themselves have to be dimmable, and the dimmer has to suit them.

Mismatched dimmers and LED fixtures are a common cause of flickering, buzzing or lights that will not go low, and choosing the control to match the fixtures avoids a lot of it.
