What Knob & Tube Wiring Is

Knob and tube is an early method of wiring a house, used in North American homes from the late 1800s into the middle of the twentieth century. It is easy to recognise once you have seen it. Individual conductors run separately through the structure, held clear of the timber on white ceramic knobs, and pass through joists and studs inside ceramic tubes.

Those ceramic parts are what the method is named for, and they are doing a job — keeping the conductors away from the wood and protecting them where they pass through it. In an original installation the two conductors of a circuit were run apart from one another rather than bundled together inside a single sheathed cable the way modern wiring is.

The difference that matters most to a homeowner is grounding. Original knob and tube installations generally did not include the separate equipment grounding conductor that newer wiring systems are expected to have. That is why homes still on original circuits usually have two-prong receptacles on them, and why adding a three-prong receptacle to such a circuit is not simply a matter of changing the outlet.

None of that makes the presence of knob and tube a verdict on a house. A great deal of it was competently installed and has sat undisturbed for decades. What matters is the condition it is actually in, what has been done to it since, and what its circuits are now being asked to carry — and those are things to look at rather than assume.

Why Homeowners Replace Knob & Tube Wiring

People rarely rewire because of one dramatic discovery. It is usually a combination of things arriving at the same time, and the reasons below are the ones that come up most often.

A typical case is a house where a kitchen is being redone, a few circuits have no ground, and the home now runs an air conditioner, a home office and a great deal more than it did when it was wired. Any one of those on its own might not prompt a rewire. Together they make it the sensible moment.

Insurance is one of the prompts, and one where expectation and reality often diverge. Insurance requirements vary by insurer and property. Homeowners should confirm specific requirements directly with their insurance provider. We can tell you what wiring a home has and what replacing it would involve; what an insurer does with that information is between you and them.

It is equally worth saying what is not on this list. Age alone is not a reason to rewire a house, and neither is the simple fact that knob and tube is present somewhere in it.

Finding Out What Your Home Actually Has

Knob and tube is rarely all in one place, and it is rarely all visible. Before a scope can mean anything, someone has to establish what is actually there.

How it usually turns up

  • Visible in unfinished areas such as a basement ceiling or an attic
  • Concealed behind finished walls and ceilings
  • Partly replaced in an earlier renovation, with some circuits left
  • Joined to newer wiring where later work was tied into it

A photograph of what you can see in the basement is genuinely useful, and a conversation about the age of the house and the work done to it over the years gets us a long way. What neither can do is tell anyone what is behind a finished wall.

That is the honest limit of a remote answer. Some homes can be understood well enough from what is accessible; others need an on-site assessment before a final scope can be confirmed. In a few cases the complete picture only emerges once walls are opened for the work itself, and we would rather tell you that at the start than revise a scope halfway through.

Partial or Whole-Home Rewiring

A house does not automatically need to be completely rewired because knob and tube is present somewhere in it. Whether the right answer is a handful of circuits or the whole installation depends on what the assessment finds.

Replacing part of the wiring

Where the remaining knob and tube is confined to particular circuits or a particular area, and the rest of the house was rewired at some earlier point, replacing what is left can be the appropriate scope. This is common in homes where a previous renovation already dealt with part of the installation. It is not something anyone can promise before looking, because it depends on what is reachable and how the existing circuits are arranged.

Rewiring the whole house

Where original wiring still serves most of the home, where its condition or the modifications made to it over the years make piecemeal work impractical, or where a major renovation is opening the house up anyway, approaching the job comprehensively is usually the more sensible route. It is often the less disruptive one overall, because the access happens once rather than repeatedly.

What decides which applies

  • The renovation work you are planning regardless
  • Which circuits are involved and what they serve

We are not going to recommend a full rewire on the strength of a house being old, and we are not going to promise partial work is possible before anyone has looked at it. Both answers are legitimate. Which one applies is a question about your house rather than about knob and tube in general.

Access to Walls and Ceilings

Rewiring means replacing wiring that runs inside the structure of the house, and that is the honest difficulty of the work. The cables are concealed, and reaching them can require access to walls and ceilings depending on the house and the routing available.

How much access is needed varies a great deal. Open basement ceilings, accessible attics, closets, and the routes behind baseboards and through floor cavities can often carry a good share of the work. Older houses frequently offer wall cavities that run further than people expect, which sometimes helps considerably. Where a run genuinely cannot be made any other way, an opening is needed.

We plan the routing with that in mind and limit unnecessary access where it is practical. What we will not do is promise a rewire with no holes, no drywall damage and no disruption — anyone offering that has not seen your house.

Drywall patching, taping and painting are not part of the electrical scope unless that has been specifically agreed. Where access is going to be needed we will tell you where, so the making-good can be planned into your project or handled alongside renovation work you already have underway.

Knob & Tube Found During a Renovation

Knob and tube is not always the reason a project starts. Sometimes it is simply what turns up once the walls are already open.

Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, additions and larger interior renovations all expose parts of a house that are normally sealed, and older wiring tends to appear at exactly that moment. The timing feels inconvenient, but the access is already there — the finishes are off and the structure is open.

That does not mean a whole house has to be rewired because a kitchen wall came down. Often the sensible scope is the circuits affected by the renovation, plus anything else the open access now makes straightforward to reach. What it does mean is that the decision is worth making before the walls close again, rather than reopening finished work later.

Modern Loads, New Circuits and Panel Capacity

Older electrical systems were designed around the demands of their own era. When a home starts adding load the original installation was never planned for, the question stops being about the wiring method alone.

What usually raises the question

  • Kitchen renovations and modern appliances
  • A home office, and everything that comes with one
  • Air conditioning
  • EV charging
  • Additional receptacles in rooms that have one or two
  • Basements and other spaces being brought into daily use
  • Lighting added or reworked during a renovation

Adding circuits to a home that still has original wiring is a question of what the new work requires and what the existing system can support. It is not, in itself, a reason to condemn what is already there.

Rewiring and panel or service upgrades are related decisions, but they are separate ones. The presence of knob and tube does not automatically mean a home needs a new panel or a larger incoming service. Plenty of houses have had the panel replaced at some point while the branch circuits behind the walls were left untouched, and the reverse happens too.

Where substantial new load or a significant number of new circuits are involved, the available panel and service capacity does need to be reviewed, and where the project calls for one a load calculation is completed to establish what the existing service can carry. That is assessed on its own terms rather than assumed from the rewiring scope.

Not every visit carries the same requirement. Rewiring work — replacing branch circuits, altering the existing installation, anything involving the panel — is the kind of job that is notifiable. An initial look at what a house has is not the same thing, and we will tell you which applies to your work rather than leaving you to work it out.

Where an inspection does apply, the record it produces outlasts the job itself. It documents that the work was carried out by a licensed electrical contractor and inspected against the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, which is the sort of thing that gets asked for later during a sale or in a conversation with an insurer. What it covers is the work that was performed — it is not a verdict on the rest of the house.

How a Knob & Tube Rewiring Project Runs

How long a rewire takes depends on the size of the house, how much wiring is being replaced, what access is available, whether other renovation work is running alongside it, and — where inspections apply — the inspection schedule. We would rather give you a realistic expectation than a convenient one, so we will not put a fixed timeline on a project before we know what is involved. Site conditions can change the order as well: what turns up once the work starts occasionally changes what makes sense to do next.

What Affects the Cost of Knob & Tube Rewiring

We do not publish prices for rewiring. The distance between replacing two circuits in an open basement and rewiring a finished three-storey house is far too wide for a number on a page to mean anything useful. What we can do is be straightforward about what moves it.
